Osteoarthritis nodules explained
#1
Osteoarthritis nodules are bony growths that develop around joints affected by osteoarthritis. They are a result of the degeneration and wearing away of the cartilage that cushions the bones in a joint. As the cartilage deteriorates, the bones rub against each other, causing the bone to thicken and form bony projections called osteophytes. Over time, these osteophytes can grow into larger nodules. These nodules can cause pain and discomfort, especially if they are located near tendons or nerves. They are most commonly found on the hands, fingers, elbows, and feet, but can occur in other joints as well. The development of osteoarthritis nodules is associated with aging, genetics, and prior joint injury.
