Osteoarthritis nodules form as a result of the degeneration of cartilage in the joints. As the cartilage wears away, the underlying bone begins to thicken and form bumps, called osteophytes, which can grow into nodules. This can cause inflammation and pain in the affected joint. The formation of nodules is more common in areas where there is a lot of stress or pressure on the joint, such as the fingers, elbows, and feet. Other factors that can contribute to the formation of osteoarthritis nodules include aging, genetics, and prior joint injury.
