Early signs of rheumatoid arthritis - KeithD - 11-02-2023

The early signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be subtle and may be easily mistaken for other conditions, such as a viral illness or osteoarthritis. However, early recognition and treatment of RA can help to prevent joint damage and improve outcomes, so it's important to be aware of the following early signs:

  1. Joint pain and swelling: One of the most common early symptoms of RA is pain and swelling in the joints, particularly the small joints in the hands and feet. The joints may also feel warm to the touch.
  2. Stiffness: Stiffness in the joints, especially in the morning or after sitting for long periods, is another common early symptom of RA. This stiffness may last for several hours.
  3. Fatigue: People with RA may feel tired or experience a general sense of malaise, even when they haven't been physically active.
  4. Fever: Some people with RA may experience a low-grade fever, which can be a sign of inflammation in the body.
  5. Loss of function: RA can cause damage to the joints, which can lead to difficulty with activities of daily living, such as gripping objects or tying shoes.
  6. Rheumatoid nodules: Small, firm lumps that form under the skin around the joints are called rheumatoid nodules and can be an early sign of RA.
