Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) typically starts with inflammation in the sacroiliac joints, which are located at the base of the spine where the spine connects to the pelvis. This can cause pain and stiffness in the lower back and buttocks, which may be worse in the morning or after prolonged periods of inactivity. Over time, the inflammation can spread to other areas of the spine, causing the vertebrae to fuse together and leading to a loss of mobility in the affected areas. AS can also affect other joints and organs in the body, such as the hips, shoulders, knees, and eyes, and can cause fatigue and other systemic symptoms.
