TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. The TMJ is responsible for the movement of the jaw, allowing you to talk, chew, and yawn. Pain or discomfort in this joint is commonly referred to as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). The exact cause of TMD is not always clear, but it can be caused by a variety of factors such as jaw injury, arthritis, grinding or clenching of the teeth, and stress. Symptoms of TMD can include pain or tenderness in the jaw, face, neck, or shoulders, clicking or popping sounds when opening the mouth, difficulty opening the mouth, and headaches. Treatment for TMD varies and may include medication, physical therapy, splints or mouthguards, and in severe cases, surgery.
