What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?
#1
Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of chronic inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints. It causes progressive stiffness and fusion of the spinal vertebrae, leading to a rigid spine and reduced mobility. It can also affect other joints, as well as the eyes, heart, and lungs. The cause of ankylosing spondylitis is not well understood, but there is a genetic component, and it is more common in men than women. Symptoms typically start in early adulthood and are treated with a combination of medication, physical therapy, and exercise.
