Is ankylosing spondylitis genetic?
#1
Ankylosing spondylitis is considered to have a strong genetic component. People with ankylosing spondylitis are more likely to have a specific genetic marker, called HLA-B27, which is present in approximately 8-9% of the general population but in up to 90% of individuals with ankylosing spondylitis. However, having this genetic marker does not necessarily mean that a person will develop ankylosing spondylitis, and not all individuals with ankylosing spondylitis have this marker. Other genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors likely play a role in the development of the condition. It is important to note that genetics alone do not determine the development of ankylosing spondylitis, and further research is needed to understand the exact causes of this condition.
