Genetic markers for ankylosing spondylitis
#1
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) has a strong genetic component, and several genetic markers have been identified that are associated with an increased risk of developing the condition. The most significant genetic marker is the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 gene, which is present in the majority of people with AS. However, it is important to note that not everyone who has the HLA-B27 gene will develop AS, and some people with AS do not have this gene.

Other genetic markers that have been associated with an increased risk of developing AS include variations in the IL23R gene, ERAP1 gene, and other genes involved in the immune system. While genetic testing can help identify some of these markers, it is not a definitive diagnostic tool for AS, and other factors such as symptoms and imaging tests are also important in making a diagnosis.
