Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) is a type of osteoarthritis that affects the spine and other large bones, such as the pelvis, ribs, and upper arm bones. It is characterized by the formation of bony growths along the edges of the vertebral bodies and other bones, which can lead to stiffening of the affected joints. DISH can cause pain and limited mobility in the affected areas, as well as compression of the spinal nerves. The cause of DISH is unknown, but it is believed to be related to aging, obesity, and certain medical conditions, such as diabetes. Treatment typically involves managing pain with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physical therapy, and weight management. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve nerve compression.
